Lately, there’s a lot of buzz surrounding the Law of Attraction. If you’ve become interested in learning all you can about the Law of Attraction, then you’re probably wondering who discovered it and how long it’s been around. This is a common question many Law of Attraction enthusiasts have, and many are surprised to learn the answer.
Who discovered the Law of Attraction? The principles of the Law of Attraction were first mentioned in a book by author Helena Blavatsky back in 1877. And in 1886, author Prentice Mulford also articulated the principles of the Law of Attraction. However, many scholars and followers of the Law of Attraction believe that it’s been in existence since the world began. This is based on the fact that the principles of the Law of Attraction are found deeply rooted in many religions and spiritual practices all over the world.
Now that you know more about the author who first mentioned the principles of the Law of Attraction and made the world stop and take notice, read on to learn more about the origins of the LOA in literature and many of the common misconceptions that surround it.
The Law of Attraction’s Origin
According to scholars who have studied the Law of Attraction, it has always existed. The concept of the LOA is present in religions all over the world. As an example, in Christianity, you can find the principle “what we think we become” which is similar to the principle in the Law of Attraction which states that like attracts like. If you think negatively, you’ll attract negative things in your life.
The Early Appearance of Law of Attraction
The first known usage of the term the Law of Attraction was way back in 1877. It was found in a book by Helena Blavatsky that focused on esoteric mysteries. Wallace Wattles was another author that follows the New Thought movement with his book “The Science of Getting Rich” a guide that showed you how to become rich by visualizing your wealth.

While Blavatsky was the first to use the concept of the Law of Attraction, Prentice Mulford was the first person to truly articulate the law as a principle. Mulford discussed the LOA at great length in many of his essays that were published in 1886 and in 1887.
In the 20th century, there was a significant surge in the interest of the Law of Attraction, which saw many important books published on the subject.
In 1937, Napoleon Hill wrote a book on the Law of Attraction called “Think and Grow Rich”. In this book, he discussed the importance of focusing on positive thinking in order to obtain success and wealth.
Over the years, many other authors jumped on the bandwagon, writing books that revolved around the Law of Attraction and teaching people the importance of positive thinking and how to attract what you desire from the universe.
Dispelling the Myths Associated with the Law of Attraction
Of course, the most common myth is the fact that a person discovered it existed. As I’ve mentioned, the Law of Attraction has always existed. Just like the world was still round before Christopher Columbus discovered it wasn’t flat.
Unfortunately, there are many other myths that are associated with the Law of Attraction over the years and these myths continue to grow as does its popularity in many different parts of the world. This is mainly a result of misconstrued or incomplete information being expressed in the media. And the result is basically a sense of general confusion regarding what the Law of Attraction is all about and how it works.
These myths keep growing as people who are new to the Law of Attraction continue to share these assumptions with others.
When a person hears about the Law of Attraction for the first time, they usually find themselves drawn to its truths. In most cases, they will eventually recognize exactly how it works on their own. However, considering there are so many conflicting ideas that are still being taught on the subject, many followers feel as though at first they used the Law of Attraction incorrectly due to misinformation.
If you’ve found yourself confused by the wide range of conflicting information you’ve come across online, then you’re not alone. Below I’ve detailed the most common myths associated with the Law of Attraction, in order to clarify how it works and how you can improve your chances of manifesting what you desire.
Myth: the Law of Attraction is New
As I mentioned earlier, this is one of the most common misconceptions about the Law of Attraction. The truth is, it’s been around since time began, it was not created as part of the new age or self-help movement. It was specifically cited back in 1877, but many of the same principles can be found in spiritual texts all over the world. Even the ancient Mayans were using principles of the Law of Attraction to design and manifest their ideal lives.

Myth: the Law of Attraction is Supernatural
With the surge of popularity in learning how to utilize the Law of Attraction, it comes as no surprise that some people have claimed that the Law of Attraction is a form of magic. But the Law of Attraction isn’t about using a magic spell to get whatever you want. It’s about putting out positive energy in a way that the universe will respond with positive results. Like attracts like is the scientific principle that the Law of Attraction is based on.
Myth: You Will Get Whatever You Visualize
Despite the fact that it’s true that visualization does play an important role in training a person’s mind to attract what they desire, you cannot simply visualize what you want and have it fall into your lap.
While you may really want a new car, regardless of how much time you spend picturing that car in your mind, it’s not going to make it appear in your driveway. Visualizing can help a person reign in their thoughts, allowing them to focus their mental energy on what they need. However, it’s your emotions and beliefs that surround your visualizations that are what really control whether or not you’ll manifest what you desire. Visualization helps you have more faith in the power of the Law of Attraction and allows you to send out the right energy to the universe.
Myth: the Law of Attraction isn’t Something You Must Learn
Unfortunately, this is a common misconception. Many people tend to forget that this isn’t a quick fix scheme. It’s not a new formula for happiness. It’s an ever-present, ever-changing part of life. So, even if you don’t know how to correctly use the law of attraction, it’s still affecting you. As an example, if you’re a very negative person you may wonder why only bad things happen to you. While your upbeat coworker seems to have the best luck and is always getting promoted, ends up with the fancy house, the beautiful wife, and the new car. This is the Law of Attraction at work and it will work whether you consciously use it or not. Many people are startled to find this out. After all these years of thinking they just had one bad streak of luck after the next, they finally came to realize that all of their misfortunes were due to their negative mindset and the negativity the universe had been sending them as a response.
Myth: the Law of Attraction Makes You Selfish
When people learn about the Law of Attraction many people mistakenly believe that it’s designed to make you care about no one but yourself. However, it’s more about learning how to prevent your negative moods or the negativity of others from affecting your well being. We’re often taught to put the needs of others before our own. However, many have misconstrued the Law of Attraction, thinking it teaches us to neglect the needs of others and focus on ourselves instead. But by learning to find the happiness in your own life you will have the strength and confidence you need to help others.
Myth: Your Thoughts Can Potentially Be Dangerous
Most people are mortified to learn that their thoughts can actually impact their lives so significantly. Instead of rejoicing in the fact that thinking positively can actually bring new opportunities into their lives, many people are scared of using the Law of Attraction for fear that they’ll only attract more negativity. The fear of negative thinking is actually a good reason for learning all you can about harnessing the power of the universe. A single negative thought doesn’t have the power to ruin your life, but a constant negative mindset will attract more negativity into your life. By learning how to be grateful for what you have and looking at the world in a new positive light, you can continue to enjoy more positivity in your life.
Myth: the Law of Attraction Doesn’t Work
Have you tried to use the Law of Attraction with no success? Why do you feel that your attempts were unsuccessful? Have you made it a point to not only think positively but to also thank the universe for what it has given you? How long did you try using the Law of Attraction?
People with no patience may feel that the Law of Attraction doesn’t work. Beginners who don’t know much about the universe or how it works may think that just a single day of positive thinking should result in an increase in wealth or that promotion at work that they’ve been hoping for, but that’s not how it works. It takes time to manifest what you desire. For some, it may be a matter of days, but for others, it can take weeks or months. In some cases, even years. When the universe delivers, it does so gradually. As an example, if you ask the universe for a promotion at work, you may find things slowly improving in the workplace, which will cause you to step up your performance. This type of improvement in your performance can ultimately lead to a raise or a promotion.
How long should I wait for the Law of Attraction to work?
As I mentioned earlier, the time frame is different for everyone, but you will see results. Major changes will not take place overnight. When the universe is at work its more of a process. Keep believing in the power of the universe and sending out positive energy and you should notice changes begin to take place in a matter of days or weeks. However, these changes can be subtle and hard to identify. To learn more, click here to read my article on Using the Law of Attraction for a Specific Person: Signs it’s Working.

Who discovered the Law of Attraction? This is hard to pinpoint. The principles of the Law of Attraction have been brought up in the scripture of different religions for thousands of years. It was mentioned in 1877 by Helena Blavatsky, yet Prentice Mulford was the first author to articulate the Law of Attraction as a principle. But again, the cause and effect of the Law of Attraction has been in existence since the world began. It works whether we know how to use it or not. How it works is commonly misunderstood, but one thing most authors and scholars can agree on is that like attracts like, which is why a positive mental attitude is the key to using the Law of Attraction effectively.
